after the October new moon, the skies are at their absolute darkest.\u00a0 And, because the national parks of Exmoor are areas with very low light pollution, this means thousands and thousands of stars can be seen here shining their brightest at this time of year.<\/p>\n<h2>Exmoor Dark Skies Festival 2025 Programme<\/h2>\n<p>Exmoor Dark Skies Festival runs from<\/p>\n<h3>Friday 17th October to Sunday 2nd November 2025.<\/h3>\n<p>And this year brings you yet another fantastic line-up of incredible ways to experience this magical time underneath the stars.\u00a0 There is, as usual, a host of fun and fascinating events for you to get stuck into.<\/p>\n<p>You can take a night walk through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/valley-of-the-rocks-exmoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valley of the Rocks<\/a>, watch out for wildlife with night-vision cameras, practise yoga under the stars&#8230; There will be guided moorland walks, night sky photography evenings, stargazing supper clubs, family friendly fun with the planetarium.\u00a0 And there&#8217;s so much to learn too!\u00a0 From talks &amp; lessons on stargazing and astronomy to space &amp; sky-themed arts &amp; crafts classes&#8230;\u00a0 There are even &#8220;astro-parties&#8221; on the agenda!<\/p>\n<p>There is something for everyone; but Exmoor is one of them.\u00a0 In recognition of the incredible starry skies visible here, Exmoor National Park was awarded Europe&#8217;s first <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk\/about-us\/press-room\/press-room\/news-2011\/international-dark-sky-reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Dark Sky Reserve\u00a0Status<\/a> in 2011 by the International Dark-Sky Association. The National Park will therefore be working with businesses, councils and local individuals in order to preserve the fantastic low light pollution levels in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Outside on a dark night, here on Exmoor, it&#8217;s possible to see up to 3,000 stars with the naked eye.\u00a0 In a city environment, you are likely to see maybe 200 stars, if you&#8217;re lucky!\u00a0 So, you can quickly appreciate the unique sights this rural landscape has to offer.\u00a0 We think you&#8217;ll find that gazing into the velvety blackness of a night sky sparkling with stars is an undeniably special experience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1320\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 650px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1320\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/dunkery-night-sky.jpg\" alt=\"Exmoor star gazing\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/dunkery-night-sky.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/dunkery-night-sky-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Credit: Keith Trueman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Other Dark Skies Top Tips<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>1. Aim to start your stargazing on Exmoor at least <strong>an hour and a half<\/strong> after sunset, so that the sky has had a chance to get properly dark.<\/li>\n<li>2. The closer you get to the <strong>new moon<\/strong>, the more stars will be visible, because even the smallest stars have a chance to shine in the pitch black with no moonlight.<\/li>\n<li>3. Your eyes can take a while to adjust to the dark, before your night-vision kicks in.\u00a0 Therefore, it&#8217;s a good idea to <strong>use red torch lights<\/strong>, to get to or set up your stargazing spot, if you can.\u00a0 These are much better at preserving your night-vision than white lights are.<\/li>\n<li>4. <strong>Plot your stargazing spot in daylight<\/strong>, so you know where to go when it&#8217;s dark.\u00a0 And make sure that it&#8217;s away from the glare of any other lights. Oh, and that it&#8217;s public land!<\/li>\n<li>5. <strong>Wrap up warm!<\/strong>\u00a0 Even in high summer, it can get pretty chilly in the middle of the night, and you&#8217;ll last longer, enjoy it more and be more likely to see shooting stars &amp; meteor showers if you&#8217;re cosy &amp; comfortable.<\/li>\n<li>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swlakestrust.org.uk\/wimbleball-lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbleball Lake<\/a> is known to be a <strong>particularly beautiful spot<\/strong> for stargazing on Exmoor, and is a favourite for those into <strong>Astrophotography<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepoltimoreinnnorthmolton.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Poltimore Inn<\/a>, near South Molton, has an <strong>observatory with telescopes<\/strong>!
