See <i>and<\/i> be \u201cThe Walker\u201d with a stroll from Lynmouth Harbour through The Valley of The Rocks\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Esplanade at Lynmouth Seafront you will find a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyncommunitydevelopmenttrust.co.uk\/projects\/the-walker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Graham statue called \u201cThe Walker\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unveiled in 2017 by BBC Countryfile\u2019s John Craven.\u00a0 If that doesn\u2019t tell you that you\u2019re in the right place for a good walk, what will?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3218\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1196px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3218 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1196\" height=\"744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151.png 1196w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151-768x478.png 768w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151-1024x637.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@walkaboutdevon-e1627211517151-80x50.png 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1196px) 100vw, 1196px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">credit: @walkaboutdevon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And ok \u2013 so we\u2019ve already covered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/valley-of-the-rocks-exmoor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Valley Of The Rocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too, but that\u2019s because we\u2019re just obsessed with this stupendous location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk\/walksdb\/254\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this 5 mile walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (approx. 8km) that starts and finishes at Lynmouth seafront, where <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Walker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is waiting to shake your hand.\u00a0 You can either walk up the cliff with the South West Coast Path, which begins where the statue is situated, or take the Cliff Railway to the top, then pick up the coast path from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This route then takes you past Castle Rock and Lee Abbey, up South Cleave (with its amazing views over Lee Bay) and through the part of the valley where evidence has been found of pre-historic remains, Celtic field systems and Bronze Age hut circles!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll find exciting options for detours through the remains of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollerday House<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Iron Age hillfort towards the end of this walk too, then just come back along the Coast Path to where you began.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so much history buried into the earth surrounding you, such stunning vistas in every direction, and so many interesting landmarks, how could you not be drawn out into the fresh air?<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3221\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3221 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Lynmouth-valley-of-rocks.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Lynmouth-valley-of-rocks.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Lynmouth-valley-of-rocks-300x94.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Lynmouth-valley-of-rocks-768x240.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">credits: @_rosanne.williams_ \/\/ @valleyofrocks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>3. Admire Rhenish Tower<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another landmark in Lynmouth Harbour, is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhenish Tower<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is also situated on the esplanade, and The Walker statue looks right onto it.\u00a0 This tower has a unique history, from its origin around 1832 for use as a bath house, to its partial survival and reconstruction after the 1952 Flood Disaster.\u00a0 So, whether you\u2019re setting off for a hike, or just ambling around the town, you really can\u2019t miss it, and should stop to take a look.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3211\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 750px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3211 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@fourandtwentypixels-e1627212245273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@fourandtwentypixels-e1627212245273.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.thebestofexmoor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/@fourandtwentypixels-e1627212245273-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">credit: @fourandtwentypixels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>4. Discover the history of Lynmouth at the Flood Memorial Hall\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1952, 90 million tonnes of water barrelled its way through Lynmouth in a disastrous flood caused by a terrible storm.\u00a0 Tragically, 34 lives were lost, and over 100 buildings destroyed.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Flood Memorial Hall<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is opposite Lynmouth Harbour, which is home to a permanent display of original images and a to-scale model of the town pre-flood.\u00a0 There is also material on the conspiracy theory that the flood might have been caused by military cloud-seeding experiments\u2026! But whether you want to entertain conspiracy theories or not, if you like to get to know the history of the places you visit, there is much to be found here of the original Lynmouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><b>5. Bathe in the forest where the Waters\u2026meet!<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another natural showstopper, within walking distance of Lynmouth, is Watersmeet, where the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water come together to create a glorious waterfall.\u00a0 If you\u2019re visiting Exmoor because you want to marvel at Mother Nature\u2019s magnificence or find inner peace through some much-needed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.growwilduk.com\/blog\/5-simple-steps-practising-shinrin-yoku-forest-bathing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shirin-Yoku<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then this will be a really special spot for you.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get there by foot from Lynmouth, there\u2019s a route which TV\u2019s Julia Bradbury recommends as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theoutdoorguide.co.uk\/walks\/julia-bradbury-walks\/britains-best-walks-exmoor-devon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of Britain\u2019s Best Walks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is just less than 9km (approx. 5.5miles) long and will no doubt be incredibly fulfilling and refreshing. However, if you just can\u2019t get enough of exploring Exmoor, we can also suggest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk\/walksdb\/255\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this 15km walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, (approx. 9miles) which involves a detour off into Barton Woods, and another to the Iron Age Hillfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, if you fancied a more literal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bathe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the forest then jump in!\u00a0 Watersmeet is a fantastic spot for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildswimming.co.uk\/map\/long-pool-watersmeet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wild swimming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with small plunge pools by the waterfall, or, a little further along the river from there, you will find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thryve.world\/adventures\/long-pool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long Pool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which stretches further and goes deeper\u2026\u00a0<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/watersmeet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watersmeet House<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently closed until further notice due to a landslip which is being fixed, but that this does <\/span><\/i><b><i>not<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect footpaths or swimming.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\t<div class=\"carousel-outer-container kad-wp-gallery kad-animation\" data-animation=\"fade-in\" data-delay=\"0\">\n\t    <div id=\"gallery-carousel-16\" class=\"rowtight\">\n\t     \t<div id=\"carousel-16\" class=\"slick-slider kt-slickslider kad-light-wp-gallery kt-image-carousel loading clearfix\" data-slider-fade=\"false\" data-slider-type=\"content-carousel\" data-slider-anim-speed=\"400\" data-slider-arrows=\"true\" data-slider-scroll=\"1\" data-slider-auto=true\" data-slider-speed=\"9000\" data-slider-xxl=\"3\" data-slider-xl=\"3\" data-slider-md=\"3\" data-slider-sm=\"3\" data-slider-xs=\"2\" data-slider-ss=\"1\">\n\t            <div class=\"tcol-lg-4 tcol-md-4 tcol-sm-4 tcol-xs-6 tcol-ss-12 g_item\"><div most astounding range of fudge flavours (all home-made of course) and insanely yummy crepes or proper ice cream &amp; waffles, with sweet toppings to rival Willy Wonka!\u00a0 Milkshakes too.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>For a Pub Lunch \u2013 The Ancient Mariner;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A holiday in Britain isn\u2019t really a holiday unless you visit a good pub.\u00a0 The Ancient Mariner sources absolutely everything they can locally.\u00a0 Not just the food either, they also have local craft beer, ciders, lager, and even local gin &amp; rum!\u00a0 It\u2019s the place to go for seafood, a Ploughman\u2019s, a traditional Sunday roast or just a good drink.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li a lack of staff since the pandemic hit!\u00a0 But luckily, it\u2019s only a few minutes\u2019 drive or a 20-minute walk up to The Oak Room in Lynton, which we can recommend for something smarter
