Dunkery Beacon<\/h2>\n

Dunkery Beacon is the highest point in Exmoor – it is, in fact, the highest point in southern England outside of Dartmoor. Standing at 519m, you can see for miles in every direction. Whether you are after a panoramic view, a taste of history, a pretty picture or just an excuse to get out onto the open moor, it’s worth a visit on a trip to Exmoor.<\/p>\n

A bit about Dunkery<\/h2>\n

Much like many other spots on Exmoor, there is evidence of human happenings here for thousands of years. Burial mounds, ancient forts, cairns and barrows dotted are around Dunkery Hill, relics of the bronze age, around 4000 years ago.<\/p>\n

Privately owned until the 20th century, it was subsequently donated to the National Trust with the stone cairn he erected to commemorate the event. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Area of Conservation and a National Nature Reserve – impressive accolades for a<\/p>\n

Marked by a cairn, Dunkery Beacon is the highest point of Dunkery Hill. Stand here for that satisfied, contemplative feeling as you gaze into the hazy distance.<\/p>\n
