DULVERTON

Dulverton Self-Catering Accommodation

Dulverton is a historic market town in West Somerset, close to the Devon border, that is often called “the Southern gateway to Exmoor”. It’s extremely welcoming to visitors at all times of the year and offers ideal access to Exmoor National Park which, as Europe’s very first International Dark Skies Reserve, provides almost limitless moorland exploration opportunities during day and night alike—as proven by the extremely popular December festival, “Dulverton by Starlight”.

Standing between the rivers Barle and Exe, which converge a little further along the steep wooded valley outside of town, Dulverton offers visitors spectacular scenery—recognised formally as a Site of Special Scientific Interest—as well as a vibrant array of activities, including particularly good trout and salmon fishing opportunities. Keen walkers will find Dulverton to be an ideal location for exploring local hiking routes, not least because both the routes of the famous Exe Valley Way and Land's End Trail pass through the town. Indeed, many lovely walks begin within Dulverton itself, including the riverside trails along the Barle in both directions. Just a few miles north, meanwhile, is Winsford Hill with its open and unspoiled moorland, so guests do not have to stray far from the town to enjoy a picture-perfect taste of Exmoor’s wild delights. In fact, Dulverton is home to Exmoor House, the Exmoor National Park Authority H.Q., which features exhibitions that showcase its heritage and a gallery.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, and situated close to an Iron Age castle and hill forts, Dulverton also boasts plenty of historical appeal in addition to its natural attractions. The Grade II listed parish church has a tower dating back to the 15th century, and there are a number of notable bridges in the area, including the oldest medieval bridge on Exmoor. Just four miles away is the well-known prehistoric clapper bridge and national nature reserve of Tarr Steps, a real highlight of any Exmoor visit.

The town of Dulverton itself is filled with quality boutiques and independent shops, award-winning restaurants, tea rooms, and pubs, many of which proudly serve up locally-sourced produce. Both foodies and avid shoppers will find plenty here to enjoy!

Here at The Best of Exmoor, we offer a variety of holiday cottages to rent in and around Dulverton and West Somerset, such as village-center accommodation for up to four people in a converted chapel or beautiful Victorian cottage overlooking the church, spacious places to stay just outside the village such as a modern detached cottage sleeping 6, or a range of dog-friendly self-catering properties slightly further field in the picturesque villages just a few miles from Dulverton itself.

Dog-friendly Holiday Cottages in Dulverton

Almost all of our Exmoor cottages are dog-friendly; just look for the paw icon which indicates that pets are welcome. Dulverton provides quick and easy access to some terrific footpaths, ensuring that both humans and canines alike can get some exercise and soak in the scenery. Furthermore, when all that ambling generates a thirst, take advantage of the fact that a huge number of Exmoor’s pubs and cafes even welcome dogs, too.

Hotels, B&Bs, and Caravans vs Self-Catering Accommodation in Dulverton

For those more familiar with staying in hotels, B&Bs, or caravans, you may find that opting for self-catering Dulverton accommodation would offer a number of benefits. Rental of a holiday cottage allows unparalleled freedom and flexibility, providing the experience of a home-from-home as opposed to the more limited option of a traditional hotel. And for those not looking for a week-long trip, flexible start days and short breaks are available.
