The region
+ MoreDulverton is considered the Southern gateway to Exmoor and sits in the steeply wooded valley of the River Barle. Whilst Exmoor is only 10 minutes drive away, it is possible to start many walks form the front door of the Old Chapel making it unnecessary to use a car once you have ...arrived. There are many things to do and see on Exmoor and along the North Devon and Somerset coast. An excellent source of information is the Exmoor visitors centre which is located in the centre of Dulverton where maps, guides and other useful leaflets can be found.
Dining out is a real treat in Dulverton with Woods award winning bar and restaurant being high up the list and booking definitely required - 01398 324007. For a taste of the orient, there is the Tong Dam Thai restaurant which has a lovely outside area for those warm summer evenings. For traditional, but extremely tasty, English pub fare the Bridge Inn is the place to head. They also have folk evening on every 3rd Saturday of the month where local songsmiths play to a full house. All these venues are within 5 minutes walk of The Old Chapel.
Exmoor itself is an incredibly beautiful and ever changing place across the seasons with an amazing variety of wildlife, both in the air and on the land. There are often seen Exmoor ponies and, although rarer but still evident, the red deer. The steeply wooded valleys and combes of Exmoor offer an excellent habitat for a miriad of birds and on the rivers one can find dippers, water wagtail and the occasional kingfisher with the skies over Exmoor being home to buzzards and other birds of prey. The river Exe between Bridgetown and Winsford has now become a place where otter have set up home. Fishing:- The rivers of Exmoor offer excellent trout and salmon fishing when in season and there is a fishery at Exbridge which offers a large selection of lakes in which to catch trout some 3 miles from Dulverton. Horse Riding: Exmoor National Park has four hundred miles of bridleways and there are numerous riding stables on Exmoor however, the nearest one to Dulverton is West Anstey Farm: 01398 341384. Cycling: Exmoor has many miles of way-marked bridle paths and forest tracks for mountain bikes. Exmoor National Park have produced three leaflets for different grades of cycling. and these leaflets are available from Dulverton Information Centre (01398) 323841. If you do not own your own bicycle you can hire one, again, the information centre will be able to point you in the right direction. Star Gazing: Exmoor has been designated the first International Dark Sky reserve in Europe. For a leaflet of the best spots on Exmoor to gaze stars from, you can down load the leaflet on the National Park Centres website.
There are literally hundreds of footpaths across Exmoor and the surrounding countryside ranging from walks across open moorland to walks along the edges of fast flowing rivers in steep sided, wooded valleys. The Exmoor visitors centre in Dulverton is an excellent source of information when it comes to planning a days walking and there are maps in The Old Chapel which are there for you to use. For the keener walkers, there is the "Two Moors Way" and the South West Coastal Path. Across Exmoor there are plenty of pubs, tea rooms and places to take refreshments, and whilst a packed lunch or pinic is enjoyable, it not entirely necessary.
