The region
+ MoreOften described as 'the jewel in Exmoor's crown', Porlock has a long history of settlements existing on or near the site of the existing village. It's a working village and includes pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and independent shops. There are few more delightful surroundings tha...n Porlock Vale, nestled at the foot of Porlock Hill, bounded to the north by its shingle ridge and breathtaking views towards the Bristol Channel and to the south by the rolling hills of Exmoor National Park. The Exmoor coastline is formed mainly of cliffs but at Porlock the land flattens out and a unique mile long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh have formed. For the bird watcher this is a very interesting site as a great variety of waders and wildfowl can be seen here in the winter as well as the occasional unusual birds passing through. Today Porlock is a wonderful working Exmoor village and boasts three pubs, two grocery shops, a traditional local butcher, chemist, cash machine, hardware shop, visitor centre, several art galleries and a range of independent restaurants, shops and tea rooms.
A favourite of the owners is the Whortleberry Tearoom by the Post office on the High Street. the cakes and scones are made in house by the owners, Helen and Shaun, and are delicious. The courtyard garden at the back of the tearoom is a lovely shady haven on a sunny day. Porlock Weir is a must see when you visit Porlock, as lovers of seafood The kitchen @ Porlock Bay Oysters is the perfect place for a meal, as is The Porlock Weir hotel, where dogs are welcome and you can have a stone baked pizza sitting outside and watching the world go by or go swimming on a sunny evening. All the pubs in the village are great, from folk music with dinner at The Castle to a Sunday roast at the Top Ship all of them are worth a visit.
There are so many things to do it is difficult to choose a favourite but as lovers of old architecture and beautiful wood, Dunster Castle is a great place to visit. It is definitely worth looking on the website to see if they are doing any behind the scenes tours of the castle as they are brilliant. Exmoor Adventures offer lots of outdoor activities. Electric mountain bike hire, which a great way to see the beauty of Exmoor without all the hard work. A truly special experience is the Marshland Tour available at various times throughout the year, when the tides are right. Exploring the marsh in a kayak is a lovely experience. Another favourite is the West Somerset Railway, you can go all the way from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard or get off a Watchet or one of the other stations and explore.
There are many walks that you can do from the house without using the car. There is a lovely walk from Porlock down to the marsh and on to Porlock Weir is a great walk with a visit to the Bottom Ship Inn for a drink at the end. Another favourite of guests is to take the bus to County Gate and then walk back to Porlock, a much easier walk than going the other way as it is mostly downhill. There are many walks and we have lots of books and maps to help you decide which one to do. It has walks for different levels and abilities. The Porlock visitors centre which is just around the corner from the house in Vale Yard is well worth a visit. They are really helpful and will have the bus timetables as well as more suggestions for walks and places to visit. As well as a lovely shop selling local crafts and Mile tea and coffee.
