Bishops Gate is part of a historic gatehouse that was once the entrance to the Bishop of Wells' Palace, when he moved to Somerset. The cottage now offers spacious holiday accommodation for up to 6 guests in three double bedrooms. There is a large, private and enclosed garden and plenty of parking.
Bishops Gate oozes history and charm - the Roman arch is even listed in the Domesday Book. The walled garden borders the church next door giving a feeling of space and tranquillity. The cottage offers a relaxed vibe and we suggest it's a perfect base for a country break yet within walking distance of all the amenities this historical town has to offer. Sleeps up to 6 guests Three double bedrooms Two upstairs bathrooms plus a downstairs loo Spacious, enclosed and private garden Ample private parking at the end on the garden Wifi, heating and electricity included Bed linen and Towels provided Arrive from 4 pm Depart by 10 am Entrance to the property is via the front door under the Roman arch. A small hallway with some hooks for hanging coats just inside the door, and a downstairs cloakroom off the hall. The kitchen-dining room is spacious and well-equipped. There is also a good-sized living room with wood-burner on the ground floor. Upstairs there are three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. The large cottage garden is walled so is very private. There is an outside table and chairs and a summer house. It's an easy walk (approx 5 mins) into the town for eating out and local shops. There is a award winning butcher and a stunning coffee house in a historic building called the Court House - well worth a visit. There are external security cameras in place which cover the entrance/exit areas of the property. These are non-audio security cameras.

The region
+ MoreWiveliscombe is on the border of Exmoor National Park and the Quantock Hills, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It's just 15 minutes in the car to the Quantocks where there are fantastic walks and stunning views. Wiveliscombe is a former market and cloth... making town. The history of the town is clear to see and it's well worth a visit.
Our favourite teahouse The Courthouse is located in the centre of the village in a stunning listed building. It has a wonderful atmosphere for tea, coffee, cakes, lunch and general browsing. Open 9:30-5pm daily, but sadly closed on Sundays. You can get wholesome food at the White Hart pub (and they do a full English breakfast from 8:30-11am) The Bear pub has a good vibe and is always full of locals, best in the summer when you can enjoy the beer garden. They have a wood burning oven and do great pizzas. More food in the village… New restaurant Duende - 01984 624 650 headed by a Gary Rhodes Chef. You should book. In the evenings they do a set menu and it is truly delicious. A bit more pricy than other local places but you will not forget it and I expect people drive a long way to come here! Indian restaurant - Taste of Spice 01984 624545 Chinese takeaway - 01984 624878 There is also a takeaway chippy around the corner. Brazier coffee house in Wellington is also a must. They have a delicious breakfast menu and are also a coffee roasters so are a great place to stock up on good coffee! The White Post teahouse is a lovely place to go and enjoy the garden and good food. Address:White Post Nursery, Langford Budville, Wellington, Somerset. TA21 0RW Another good pub in the area (probably better eating than our village pubs) is The Globe, in Milverton .
Below are some great heritage sites to visit in the area: Cleeves Castle Dunster Castle Hestercombe Gardens Taunton Castle (the museum of Somerset) Barrington Court
