The region
+ MoreWheddon Cross is a village on Exmoor, based around the crossroads; the roads run from north to south between Minehead and Dulverton, and east to west between Taunton and North Devon. The village is argued to be the highest on Exmoor, standing at 980 feet above sea level, and the ...highest point on Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon (1704 feet above sea level) is the focal point of the village. Dunkery Beacon is about three miles from the village, there are fantastic panoramic views from Dunkery; wild moorland to the west, the Bristol Channel and Wales to the north, the rolling Brendon Hills to the east and the Quarme Valley to the south. In recent years the village has become famous for the abundance of snowdrops in the nearby valley which has become known as 'Snowdrop Valley'. The snowdrops bloom around February and a park and ride system operates from the village to enable visitors easy access to the "carpet of snowdrops". Wheddon Cross is surrounded by beautiful countryside; open moorland, wooded valleys and farmland. An abundance of wildlife can often be seen, including Exmoor ponies and red deer. There are a number of great walks along marked footpaths and bridleways, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through. The village of Wheddon Cross is 5 minutes away by car and has a family pub, mini-supermarket with post office counter, fuel and ATM. Dulverton village is 15 minutes away in the opposite direction, is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a smooch through the antique and local shops. Medieval Dunster is 15 minutes away, it's easy to while away a whole day there, do not miss Dunster Castle, and there are lots of shops, plus several cafes, pubs and restaurants to be explored too! 5 minutes away is the small hamlet of Bridgetown which has a pub, it's family and dog-friendly. Minehead is 25 minutes away and has as Steam Train Railway where train trips to Bishops Lydeard run through the day.
