Gate Cottage has a courtyard garden with overflowing pots of fresh herbs and a ready barbecue to take full advantage of its position as a private sun-trap. The living-room has a log-burner, tv, dvd player and comfy sofas. The kitchen is a light bright galley style with a door that leads onto the garden. The dining room can comfortably seat six. Every member of the family is welcome, including furry, waggy ones! The beauty of the area is definitely one best shared with our four legged friends, all that we ask is that paws are wiped and kept on the floor. The region
+ MoreOutside of the door the private lane leads directly into the woods of the National Trust Holnicote Estate and is about a 20 minute walk to the south west costal path. The stunning scenery is criss-crossed with hundreds of walks straight from the Hall door. There are fresh free r...ange eggs and organically grown vegetables for sale from Lynch Mill, the neighbours of the hall with a quaint honesty box. The village of Porlock is a 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive and offers a good range of places to eat out, with three pubs, two restaurants, two local shops, art gallery, museum, butcher, chemist etc. Ten minutes drive away is Minehead with a full range of shops and several supermarkets. Allerford and Bossington are hamlets near to Porlock in Exmoor, and also part of the National Trust's Holnicote Estate. The Exmoor coastline is formed mainly of cliffs but at Porlock the land flattens out and a unique mile long shingle ridge and an inland salt marsh have formed. There are many interesting sites on and around the ridge including an old lime kiln, Pillboxes built during the second world war, a memorial stone to commemorate the American airman killed when a B24D liberator bomber crashed here on 29th October 1942 during the second world war. For the bird watcher this is a very interesting site as a great variety of waders and wildfowl can be seen here in the winter as well as the occasional unusual bird passing through.
Porlock is a charming village situated within the Exmoor National Park in Somerset, England. Walk the South West Coast Path - This long-distance walking trail passes through Porlock and offers stunning views of the coastline and surrounding countryside. Explore Porlock Weir - This picturesque harbour village is just a short walk from Porlock and offers a range of pubs, cafes, and restaurants, as well as opportunities for fishing and boat trips. Visit the Porlock Marsh Nature Reserve - This wetland reserve is home to a variety of bird species, including curlews and lapwings, as well as rare plants such as the marsh orchid. Climb Porlock Hill - This steep hill offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and coast, and is popular with cyclists and walkers. Visit the Porlock Museum - This small museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of the village and the surrounding area. Take a horse riding lesson or go for a ride - There are several stables in the area that offer horse riding lessons and guided rides. Go fishing - The River Avill and other local streams and rivers offer excellent opportunities for trout and salmon fishing. Visit the Coleridge Cottage - This National Trust property was once the home of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge and offers a fascinating glimpse into his life and work. Enjoy a cream tea - There are several cafes and tea rooms in Porlock that offer delicious cream teas, made with locally sourced ingredients.
Exmoor is vibrant place with many places to enjoy on your stay, but a few local attractions are the Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre (2mins from the Hall) where you can book a bird experience day, or go out on one of their horses for a ride. In Allerford 5 minutes walk away there is museum, tea room and Cross Lanes restaurant. Walk the other way down the road and you will find yourself 5 minutes walk from the sea with views of the coast peeping through the trees and gateways as you walk. The village you pass through on you way to the sea is called Bossington and has been plucked straight from the front of a chocolate box, with thatched houses, bread ovens on the side and a pretty little tea room called Kitnors which does one of the best cream teas in the area. Once through Bossington it is only a short distance to the beach, you can walk all the way round the bay on the shingle bank to Porlock Weir, the tiny harbour, where you can enjoy eating the local oysters at the Cafe or visit Exmoor Glass to watch the crafts men blowing beautiful creations.
